The Importance of Bridal Dress Alterations
All the main planning for your big day is settled and ready to go. You have the catering sorted, the seating plan organised, the location and the reception all set. Even that perfect dress you have always dreamed of is in hand; but one thing you shouldn’t forget to factor in is the time needed for your bridal dress alterations – in order to make your gown fit you to a tee.
Though you may think that you shouldn’t need to get bridal dress alterations if it’s being made just for you, this is simply not true. Changes and fittings are an important part of the process – especially for a custom dress. If you are choosing a vintage gown or a dress off the rack, fittings become even more important to personalise the final outfit.
Custom dresses
When you custom-order a gown, you need to expect to have some bridal dress alterations done along the way at different stages. First you will have your original measurements taken once you and your designer have settled on a style. Then, a toile is cut from calico fabric and you will need to come in again to have it fitted before it is cut in the final fabric. Finally, once the dress is put together, you will need to have it tailored again, to ensure it fits you everywhere perfectly. Once the fittings are complete, the embellishments will be added before a final try-on.
Off the rack
There is nothing wrong with getting an “off the rack” wedding gown. In fact, many stores and designers have their signature classic styles, which work for a variety of body shapes. But this doesn’t mean that the gowns need to all look identical to one another. On the contrary, once you have some personalisations completed, every gown can take on a life of its own for the individual wearer. These gowns are usually best for those weddings where budget is an issue, as they won’t require a total overhauls in order to look beautiful on you.
The vintage find
We love vintage! Vintage dresses, vintage styles, vintage wedding parties and plans! It is all the rage these days, and it’s no wonder. These classic styles looks good on so many people and add an air of sophistication – so why not jump on the bandwagon and wear a gown with a history? However, when you buy a true vintage dress, there is no doubt you will need to get bridal dress alterations done to make it fit you properly. But the extra effort will be definitely be worth it. A word of warning – do enlist the help of a professional experienced in dealing with vintage gowns, as they need special handling and care.
