Ideas for Last-Minute Honeymoons

Ideas for Last-Minute Honeymoons

Some couples plan their honeymoons months in advance, but for others, coordinating the post-wedding trip is more of a last-minute thing. It may be that you were too busy organizing the wedding to deal with travel plans, or that a couple of generous cash wedding gifts have made a honeymoon possible when it had previously not been in the budget. If you are in the position of trying to plan a honeymoon at the last minute, check out these great ideas.

For outdoorsy types, a quick and easy honeymoon to pull together would be a hiking trip. If you live anywhere near the East Coast, check out the hikes available along the Appalachian Trail. Given that it runs from Maine to Georgia, there is a part of it reasonably near anyone in the East. One of the nice things about the Appalachian Trail is that there are hikes which are appropriate for all levels of experience. You can fold a camping trip into the hiking honeymoon, or spend the night at one of the huts along the trail. The huts are actually communal spaces with bunk beds, showers, and meals provided by the staff at a very reasonable cost. Of course, honeymooners need privacy, so all plan for a night or two in your own tent or a country inn near the trail.

A very easy last minute honeymoon to pull together is a trip to a big city. If you are within driving distance, you don’t need to do anything more than reserve a hotel room. Once you arrive, the concierge can assist you with finding the types of activities you will most enjoy. He or she can get you theater tickets, make dinner reservations, point you towards the best shopping and sightseeing, and clue you in on the can’t-miss cultural events in the area. Definitely plan to have at least one romantic dinner in a fancy restaurant that is out of your usual routine. Bring your wedding jewelry and a beautiful dress to make it even more special.

In the summer, it can be fun to take a driving honeymoon with few pre-planned activities. Rent a convertible and hit the road to see where it leads you! The places you go will be determined by what is near your wedding location. You could take a tour up the California coast, stopping at vineyards along the way. Or criss-cross Florida, visiting such disparate locations as Disney World, the Everglades, and tony Palm Beach. If you are into kitsch, take a tour of local attractions in your part of the country like the world’s biggest ball of twine (in Kansas) or the largest pork display counter (North Carolina). A great resource for this kind of honeymoon trip is the website Roadside America, which lists all sorts of attractions and oddities.

If you and your fiance have passports, you could even plan a last-minute honeymoon to a Canadian city like Toronto. Clean, friendly, and modern, it would be a fun place to explore together. Shop for pieces to match your wedding jewelry set from a local designer. Visit PATH, the world’s largest underground shopping center (great for the winter!), or enjoy the local museums and shows. The neat thing about a honeymoon to Toronto is that you will feel like you are really getting away, yet it is close enough to make it a quick trip from many U.S. cities. It is also a place which feels culturally similar enough that you will not need to study a guidebook before going, making it ideal for a last minute getaway. Happy Honeymooning!
