Garage Tile Flooring – Advantages and Disadvantages

Opinions are divided as to what constitutes the best garage floor. Is it rolled flooring or is garage tile flooring the answer? Whatever your choice of garage flooring and this is really an individual decision, adding garage flooring is a good decision. Some of the benefits include: adding warmth to cold floors; makes cleaning very easy; improves the look of the garage taking it from dowdy to cheery and bright; provides sound proofing anti-fatigue properties to a certain degree.

This article talks about garage tile flooring and the advantages and disadvantages you should consider before installing it in your garage.

Tiles date back to the middle ages and have always been a popular flooring option. From the simple to the ornate choices are virtually limitless and you can have a field day choosing your tiles.

Garage tile flooring comes in two types:
Interlocking type – these tiles are square shaped compartment mats that have to be connected.
Peel and stick type – these tiles bond with the concrete.

The interlocking tiles are suitable for any garage but are not as durable as the peel and stick type of tiles. On the other hand, peel and stick tiles can only be fitted on garage floors which are either brand new or extremely clean. The tiles will not bond with heavily stained floorings.

For some people garage tile flooring is the only choice and they view it as the best option. Tiles are easier to install though the protection provided to concrete can be achieved by painting as well. Tiles however are far easier to install but garage tile flooring does come with its own pros and cons as we shall see going forward.

Cost of garage tile flooring can add up, which is one of the drawbacks to this method. You can get a kit from a home improvement store for a single car garage, which could easily set you back $500 plus. Of course one would have to consider quality, design and brand as well. You can install a floor mat but this will not be so easy to clean or maintain in the long run.

Garage tile flooring is one of the easiest to install and comes second only to floor mats. Interlocking tiles simply have to be connected as you would do with building blocks. The peel and stick, simply need a clean garage floor, then you just peel off the back and stick the tiles to the concrete.

Installation of garage tiles though extremely easy is a very time-consuming job. It is recommended that you divide your garage into sections and split the job to make it easier on yourself.

The drawback to installing interlocking tile flooring is the tiles tend to shift about because they are not firmly fixed in place. The peel and stick variety will not adhere firmly to a less than clean floor; we all know that finding a cleaner than clean garage floor is a near impossibility.

In terms of maintenance, tile flooring is one of the easiest to manage. Run your damp mop over the floor once a week and you will have a clean floor. You can always do a through clean up periodically using water and detergent to get rid of oil stains and such.
